How to Set Up Your Web-Based Notebook

Building a Web-Based Notebook

Unlike most of your other courses for which you probably keep a paper-based notebook, in this Intro to Computer Science course, we will be setting up and using a web-based notebook. This notebook will consist of a personalized website where you can keep notes, links to other sites, copies of your working code, etc.

There are many advantages to using a web-based notebook over a paper-based one:

  • Your notebook comes pre-loaded with information and links provided by your instructor.

  • You can access the notebook from any place in the world where you have an internet connection.

  • You never lose your notebook (or have the dog accidentally eat it).

  • You can cut and paste into your notebook easily.

  • Your instructor can look at and grade your notebook without you having to give him/her a physical copy.

You will build your web-based notebook using a tool called Google Sites. This video describes the process by which you will build your notebook for this class:

After you have built your notebook as instructed in the above video, ask your instructor if he/she needs a link to your notebook for grading purposes.

You should set the sharing permissions in your notebook such that the only two people who can write to your notebook are you and your instructor.
